Abstract
Class II Subdivisions: treatment strategies
Class II subdivisions represent a real challenge for the orthodontist.
When an asymmetrical occlusion between the right and left sides is detected, the first step is to identify the cause of the problem and then make a correct diagnosis: Type 1 Subdivision, in which the lower midline is deviated, or Type 2 Subdivision, in which the upper midline is deviated. There are also mixed subdivisions, in which both problems coexist.
The diagnosis is the starting point for developing treatment strategies, which must necessarily be different depending on whether we are treating a Type 1 or a Type 2.
In general, Type 2 malocclusions are dentoalveolar malocclusions, so that an orthodontic treatment will be sufficient to ensure a successful correction; Type 1 malocclusions, on the other hand, often are caused by a skeletal problem (mandibular deviation), for which treatment may include an orthodontic, orthopedic, or surgical approach.
This presentation will provide the tools needed to make a correct diagnosis and differentiate the various treatment strategies in order to successfully treat these complex malocclusions and achieve a proper smile aesthetic.
